Happy HR Professionals Day! Today, we celebrate the dedicated individuals who play a crucial role in shaping the workplace. To mark this special occasion, we had the pleasure of connecting with two of our valued customers, Laura B. and Lisa L., who shared their experiences and insights on working in HR. Through their stories, we gain a deeper understanding of the passion and commitment that drives HR professionals to create positive and productive work environments. Join us as we explore their journeys and celebrate the impact of HR on organizations everywhere.
What do you enjoy most about working in HR?
Laura: The strategic impact. HR professionals can influence all levels of the business by providing valuable insights and data on the human capital of the organization.
Lisa: Working directly with all employees to help them resolve issues that they can’t solve on their own in benefits. From a human resources information system (HRIS) aspect, working to solve problems with reporting, timesheets, or things that affect employees.
Can you share a memorable experience or achievement in your HR career that you are particularly proud of?
Laura: Successful mergers and acquisitions. Successfully integrating two or more corporate cultures and HR systems, minimizing disruption, and maximizing employee satisfaction.
Lisa: Managing the organization structure during an acquisition of another company (prior position).
What inspired you to pursue a career in HR?
Laura: Originally, I was drawn to law, attracted by the challenge of advocating for justice. However, during my studies, I discovered a particular interest in employee relations and conflict resolution. I found that my ability to understand different perspectives, communicate effectively, and find common ground was a valuable asset in these areas. This experience led me to realize that I could have a significant impact on people’s lives by helping to create positive and supportive work environments. HR offered a unique opportunity to combine my passion for justice with my skills in interpersonal communication and conflict resolution. I was inspired by the potential to contribute to the overall well-being and success of an organization by fostering a positive and inclusive workplace culture.
Lisa: It is a long story! I started out in the legal world as a paralegal. I enjoyed that work but didn’t always get to work directly with the clients. I have carried that legal experience into HR and can work directly with employees as well!
What advice would you give someone considering a career in HR?
Laura: Develop a growth mindset. HR is a dynamic field that requires continuous learning and adaptation. Be open to new challenges and opportunities for professional development. Get your certification through strategic human resource management (SHRM) so you can demonstrate your knowledge and commitment to the field. Develop strong interpersonal skills. HR interacts with people from all levels of an organization. Strong communication, empathy, and conflict-resolution skills are essential. Also, build a foundation in business. Understanding basic business principles, such as finance, marketing, and operations, will help you contribute effectively to strategic decision-making.
Lisa: If you are a people person, definitely pursue it! Become a partner to your non-HR coworkers. Help them be ready for upticks in hiring or downturns.
What skills do you think are essential for success in HR?
Laura: The HR landscape is constantly evolving. The ability to adapt to new technologies, trends, and challenges is essential.
Lisa: Soft skills, people skills. Being analytical but also able to see the gray areas as not all things are black/white. Attention to detail and ability to strategize and foresee any issues in the future, which really requires being a partner to your HR and non-HR coworkers.
