It’s All About Your People: A Wrap Up of the Industry Insights Virtual Summit

UKG (Ultimate Kronos Group) recently held its 2nd annual Industry Insights Digital Summit. With over 1,500 attendees, this virtual half-day of learning and networking event provided a wealth of information and expert insights on various workforce issues.

The open general session, "People-Centric Operations: The Future of Life-Work," kicked off the day. UKG HCM expert, Cecile Alper-Leroux, revealed our new Life-work Technology™ approach for designing enterprise HCM solutions that incorporates people's emotions and preferences. Then, leadership development expert and founder of DX Learning Solutions, Alex Draper, showed us how modern, science-based leadership practices can help create people-centric cultures for better business outcomes. Cecile reminded us all that if the past year has taught us anything it's that we are more alike than different. Moreover, your people are the key to an organization’s success. Ethics, social responsibility, diversity, and inclusion matter more than ever before - and HCM solutions, like UKG's, help advance an employee's life and work journey.  

In addition, there were 2 healthcare-focused sessions: 1) “Wellbeing at Work: Initiatives That Make Impact,” and 2) “Optimizing Healthcare Resource Planning and Allocation.”  

The “Wellbeing at Work: Initiatives that Make Impact” was moderated by Nanne M. Finis, Chief Nurse Executive, UKG, with featured panelists: Jacqueline Hoying, PhD, RN, Assistant Professor, The Ohio State University College of Nursing; Michelle M. Kligman, Psy.D, MBA, MS, Senior Vice President, Human Resources & Chief Experience Officer, Jackson Health System; and David Almeda, Chief People Officer, UKG. This lively conversation continued the focus on health and wellness of the workforce. While each panel participant came from various organizational settings, several common themes emerged: 

1. Take a holistic view of your employees. Echoing the sentiment in the opening session, employees’ personal health took center stage as leaders delivered supportive benefits and services to their employees. Safety measures were immediately addressed as was childcare and mental health. Eventually, flexible work options took center stage allowing employees to prioritize their renewed focus on living their best life and not being defined by work.

2. Relying on others is critical. There was no playbook for the pandemicall panelists relied on colleagues, partners, and frontlines managers to help figure things out together. Also keep in mind that employees’ perception and needs can differ. Leaders need to better understand employees’ sentiment, check in with them frequently, solicit input and take action on it.

3. Sustaining the gains. Innovative organizations took an intentional look at their cultures and re-evaluated them. David reminded us all that employees will remember how organizations acted during this time; what they did or didn't do will be remembered and this will further define their culture.  

Wrapping up the day featured several UKG subject matter experts discussing “Optimizing Healthcare Resource Planning and Allocation.” The COVID-19 pandemic taught us all many lessons and it proved how critical it is to enable staff and leaders to make the right decisions at the right time with the right information.  Visibility across the entire enterprise to redeploy resources quickly and cost-effectively across various locations, sites, and roles became mission-critical. In talking with customers, our 25 UKG clinician experts recognized the need for insightful proven practices surrounding creative staffing models to assist customers and nurse leaders in streamlining processes, improving data accuracy and reporting, while decreasing administrative burdens on operational leaders - all with the goal of executing safe and effective patient care.
