Nurses Month: Highlighting the Many Ways Nurses Make a Difference

Today’s post comes to us from advisory board member Nanne Finis, RN, MS, chief nurse executive at UKG.

May is Nurses Month, and over the past few weeks, my colleagues and I have been honoring the many ways “Nurses Make a Difference” in the lives of millions and millions of people across the world.

The COVID-19 pandemic has put a much-deserved spotlight on nursing, displaying at a large scale the pivotal role that nurses play in caring for patients and their families in all care environments.

It has been humbling to witness the praise that nurses all across the world have received in this pandemic period. But, as my healthcare colleagues understand deeply, the industry has many challenges that must be rapidly addressed.

As I wrote about last month, the new UKG-Wolters Kluwer study provides a wake-up call for the nursing industry, detailing how the pandemic has exacerbated the pre-existing nursing shortage and offering what can be done to ensure better short- and long-term outcomes. A better work experience for nurses helps ensure a better experience for patients, and this timely theme is explained further in the UKG Leading Healthcare industry brief.

Still, this is a time to recognize the differences nurses make day in and day out, so I’d like to share some of the ways my colleagues and I have been celebrating nurses throughout Nurses Month. I encourage you to take a few minutes to read the articles below. If you are a nurse — or maybe you know or have been personally touched by someone in the nursing industry — I hope you find the articles educational, inspiring, and perhaps moving.

Also, I would be remiss if I didn’t give a huge shoutout to my employer, UKG, who made a corporate donation to the DAISY Foundation in honor of Nurses Month. This incredible foundation is focused on recognizing nurses around the world for their extraordinary compassion and the skillful care provided to patients and their families. Thank you, DAISY, and thank you, UKG, for your ongoing support!

As someone who’s been a nurse for more than 40 years, I can honestly say there is no profession like nursing. I hope we can each take a moment to thank a nurse today for their service, resilience, fortitude, and commitment. From one nurse to so many others out there: Thank you! We see you, and we appreciate you!

Below is my personal Nurses Month message of gratitude. Special thanks to the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS).
